About The Project
Over the past two days in E9 we learned about typefaces, and all the important parts of them. Our project was to write out our name in a serif font and then label the parts of it. We started out with tying our names then making the three lines that the text lines up with. The base line, in which the letters sit on, the X-height, where the top of the lower case letters hit, and the Caps-height, where the top of the capital letters hit. We then started labeling what particular parts of the text were called. For example, the inner part of the A is called a counter, and the thin parts of a letter are called the hairline.
What I learned
Throughout this project and lesson, I learned a lot. Firstly, that Comic Sans is the most hated font because of its overuse. This font was designed for comic books or children's books, as it is a fun childish font, not everyday uses like bathroom or warning signs. I also learned that the typeface conveys a lot of meaning. The same words typed in a different font will be interpreted way differently. For example, if you wrote the words "you're mine" in a curly and pretty font, then it would be conveyed as love. But, if you wrote "you're mine" in a font that looks like something from a horror movie, well that will be interpreted way differently.
